What is Ocular Hypertension?11 Yanoff M, Duker JS. Ophthalmology. 1st ed. London, UK: Mosby International Ltd; 1999

IOP over 21mm Hg.
In a normal healthy eye, aqueous fluid is produced and drained at a balanced rate. When the flow is disturbed beyond the eye's capacity to adjust, the amount of aqueous fluid builds up to dangerous levels, increasing high eye pressure (IOP). The term “ocular hypertension” is used to describe maintained IOP over 21 mm Hg, with no visible optic nerve head damage or visual field loss.

Consequences for blood flow.
Ocular hypertension can have serious consequences for blood flow to the eye's retinal layer. Since the globe of the eye will not significantly expand with an increase in internal pressure, a rise in IOP exerts constricting pressure against the retinal blood vessels, especially those of the optic nerve head. This ultimately results in visual field loss.

Help prevent spikes in eye pressure.
IOP tends to fluctuate over a 24-hour period. For individuals with glaucoma, these fluctuations are more pronounced. These fluctuations, or spikes, can contribute to glaucoma progression. If you have been prescribed medication(s) to lower your IOP, it is essential that you take it as directed and not skip doses. Missing doses can contribute to IOP spikes.
