Types of glaucoma

Other Glaucoma Types11 Yanoff M, Duker JS. Ophthalmology. 1st ed. London, UK: Mosby International Ltd; 1999

Other types of glaucoma include:

Childhood Glaucoma
This glaucoma type is rare and starts in infancy, childhood or adolescence. There are few, if any, symptoms and it's thought to be a hereditary condition.

Congenital Glaucoma
This glaucoma type usually appears just after birth, although it may not become apparent until later in the first year. It affects infants born with defects in the angle of their eye that slow the normal drainage of fluid. Unlike childhood glaucoma, there are obvious symptoms such as cloudy eyes, sensitivity to light, and excessive tearing.

Surgery is usually the suggested treatment, since it's difficult to give medicines to infants. In addition, many medications are not approved for treatment of infants. The surgery generally is safe and effective. If performed promptly, these children usually have an excellent chance of experiencing good vision.

Secondary Glaucoma
Secondary glaucoma can develop as a result of eye surgery or advanced cataracts, eye injuries, certain eye tumors, or uveitis (inflammation inside the eye). A severe form, called neovascular glaucoma, is linked to diabetes. Also, corticosteroid drugs used to treat eye inflammations and other diseases can trigger glaucoma. If you have any of these risk factors, you should be monitored carefully.
