Types of glaucoma

Exfoliation Syndrome11 Yanoff M, Duker JS. Ophthalmology. 1st ed. London, UK: Mosby International Ltd; 1999

Tiny flakes.
Exfoliation is a cause of glaucoma found everywhere in the world, but is most common among people of northern European descent. In about 10 percent of the population over age 50, a whitish material which looks like tiny flakes of dandruff builds up on the lens of the eye. As the iris moves, this material is rubbed off the lens along with pigment that's rubbed off the iris.

Both pigment and exfoliation material clog the trabecular meshwork drainage system, leading to high levels of IOP.

Detectable before glaucoma develops.
Having exfoliation syndrome doesn't mean glaucoma will develop. But if you do have it, your chances of developing glaucoma are about six times higher than if you don't. For some reason, exfoliation syndrome often appears in one eye long before the other. This could be a reason some people develop glaucoma in only one eye. The syndrome can be detected before the glaucoma develops, so you can be carefully observed and treated to minimize any chance of sudden vision loss.
